Datum Alloys are a leading supplier of 304 stainless steel foils and sheets from 0.02mm to 0.50mm thick. 304 stainless steel (type 1.4301 in the European BS EN 10088 standard) is a nickel based austenitic stainless steel classified as 300 series – a non-magnetic alloy containing high levels of chromium and nickel and low levels of carbon. Also known as ’18/8′ as it contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, 304 is a widely used metal for parts used in corrosive environments and can be severely deep drawn – a forming technique suited to seamless parts that require significant strength.
Grade 304 has a high nickel content that is typically between 8 and 10.5% by weight – this high nickel level content combined with 18-20% chromium content give 304 stainless it’s excellent corrosion resistance.
304 is used for parts in a wide variety of industries and applications including:
• Domestic appliances e.g. refrigerators, dishwashers
• Commercial food processing equipment
• Storage vessels and pipes for corrosive liquids
• Heat exchangers
• pharmaceutical equipment
• mining equipment
• hospital surgical equipment
• marine equipment
• cryogenic vessels
