DATUM PhD 304 STAINLESS STEEL

Datum Alloys are a leading supplier of 304 grade stainless steel foils and sheets from 0.02mm to 0.50mm thick. 304 stainless steel (type 1.4301 in the European BS EN 10088 standard) is a nickel based austenitic stainless steel classified as 300 series – a non-magnetic alloy containing high levels of chromium and nickel and low levels of carbon.

Also known as ’18/8′ as it contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, 304 can be severely deep drawn – a forming technique suited to seamless parts that require significant strength.

Applications for 304 Stainless Steel

  • Domestic appliances e.g. refrigerators, dishwashers
  • Commercial food processing equipment
  • Fasteners
  • Storage vessels and pipes for corrosive liquids
  • Heat exchangers
  • Pharmaceutical equipment
  • Mining equipment
  • Hospital surgical equipment
  • Marine equipment
  • Valves
  • Cryogenic vessels

304 Stainless Steel: Attributes

  • Corrosion Resistance:
304 has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of atmospheric environments and when in contact with different corrosive substances.
  • Heat Resistance:
304 has good resistance to oxidation and can be used at temperatures up to 870°C.
  • Machinability:
304 has superior machinability giving higher machining rates and lower tool wear in many operations. 304 stainless can be machined, folded or roll-formed into a variety of components for applications.
  • Weldability:
Datum 304 stainless steel has excellent forming and welding characteristics both with and without fillers. Post-weld annealing is not required when welding thin sections.
  • Hardness Range:
    370-410HV.
  • Tensile:
    1130 N/mm².

304 STAINLESS STEEL

Grade 304 stainless steel has a high nickel content that is typically between 8 and 10.5% by weight – this high nickel level content combined with 18-20% chromium content give 304 stainless it’s excellent corrosion resistance.
